Chapter 3 & Body Ritual Among the Nacirema
Not everyone in this Earth is understood. What can seem completely outrageous to you is absolutely normal to another. What one may consider "weird or absurd" another may find nothing weird about it. 20 years ago Professor Linton brought to the attention of Anthropologists the ritual of Nacirema. The main belief of the Nacirema culture is that they believe the human body is ugly and filled with disease. In these households they all have shrines and rituals. Some of the rituals discussed were pretty harsh for example when they see the "Holy Mouth Man" and he gouges out their teeth when they are decaying and puts in hog hairs and other magical powders, it sounded like a dentist but imagine going through all that pain without any medicine to numb you or anything. Chapter 3 states how there are different cultures we are surrounded by and like I stated in the beginning what can seem completely outrageous to you is absolutely normal to another. We must not judge although we all do it is not our place to say that these rituals are completely crazy because what my morals may be aren't the same morals as those people. I think the article was well researched and followed many of the guidelines that is required.

Hello there, i completely agree with you. i believe that there are so many cultures and traditions in the world and some of them might seem strange to us but we have to learn how to accept each and everyone of them. Like I said in my blog, and I saw you stated it here as well, what might be normal for us in our own society might be inhumane for others out there in the world. I also agreed with your statment which said that the article was a well researched paper and we clearly see that the author put alot of time and effort into following every step in creating a research paper. See you in class. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right I actually find this very interesting because they believed that the human being where filled with disease . I actually liked this article because it made me realize that what I think is normal might not be to other people
ReplyDeleteI love when you said "What can seem completely outrageous to you is absolutely normal to another. What one may consider "weird or absurd" another may find nothing weird about it". I felt this is a perfect way of saying don't judge a book by its cover. I also felt that a lot of the body rituals were harsh.
ReplyDeleteHello, I think the physical torment that was inflicted on the people of Narcirema is a disgrace to humanity period, I know we live in a world with many different cultures and subcultures but to gouge ones teeth out is degrading and subpar humanity, I feel that we have evolved over the years and no matter what culture one is from, Violence is violence, cruelty is cruelty... and that is just insane in my opinion, I would not used the world judge in this matter i will like to say it is fair and my right as a human being to assess a situation and come to my own understanding, call it judging, I call it becoming knowledgable. When we deal with hot and cold for instance we won't get into a hot bath tub of water.. Hot and cold are the same, there are just different degrees of hot and cold, Just as when one is taken something too far, in my opinion it is taken too far. Just as many other rituals throughout the world are taken too far.
ReplyDeletei agree with you in the fist two sentences because people have different believes. also some people don't understand why other people have different believe than there and make fun of it.i like the article because it true and make me realize more about other people think on that what is normal to me.
ReplyDeleteHi, i completely agree with what you wrote. i feel the same way with when you said what can be weird to us and can be normal for them. i know in some cultures they eat the weirdest thing or dress a certain type of way we are not are not use to but its ok it causes no harm to us why not just let them be. Its part of their daily lives and they are the ones who are comfortable with it. i see as if your not harming me or anything close to me, do as you wish and what makes you comfortable. Culture isnt for us to judge but to open our minds and not be ignorant and close minded. Some thing can fascinate us some might not but at the end of the day its something we learn new. We learn something new everyday wouldnt hurt. Good blog post ;)
